Environment Canterbury

The Canterbury region covers a land area of 4.22 million hectares, the largest of all the regions in New Zealand. It extends from the catchment of the Clarence River in the north to the Waitaki River catchment in the south. The Main Divide forms the western boundary and the region extends 12 nautical miles into the Pacific Ocean.

Ten district councils and Christchurch City make up the region covered by Environment Canterbury. Total regional population at the 1996 census was approximately 480,000.

Canterbury has a strong farming economy based on pastoral and mixed farming sectors, and increasingly important horticulture, viticulture and other special agrarian industries. The forestry and logging sectors at present are quite small, and fishing and aquaculture make a smaller contribution. There is also a growing tourism and recreation industry.

The largest sectors of the economy, in terms of gross regional output, are urban based, with financial and business services, wholesale and retail trade, manufacturing, public administration, and building and construction between them contributing more than 50% of gross regional output. Farming, farm related processing and timber products contribute a further 30% with transport services around 7%.
