Protecting information systems and electronic information starts with documenting IT policies and applying them consistently throughout the Council at all levels. Written policies show stakeholders that the Council takes IT security seriously and is diligent in its efforts to protect itself from cyber threats.  Adding more hardware and software controls won’t address the biggest threat to your security - people.

Writing a comprehensive set of information system policies is an onerous task and few IT Managers have the time, resources or writing skills to develop a comprehensive set of policies that fully document onsite practices, communicate the expectations of management and provide a means of assessing Council compliance with best practice.

Keeping your Policy documents in a book on the back shelf of the computer room will not help users understand their responsibilities towards maintaining IT security.  Loading the Kaon Security Policy Mini-web on your intranet gets around the dissemination problem and policies are available to all staff all the time.

Policy statements linked to the international ISO 17799 framework make it is possible to ascertain the extent to which the Council meets internal compliance objectives, adheres to best practice and identifies areas where security is weak.  Policies and compliance with ISO 17799 form an integral part of best practice frameworks such as COBIT and ITIL.  The Policy suite is also linked to SIGS (Security in the Government Sector).

Don’t be caught out next time the Auditor comes around.  Put IT Policies at the top of your “Can Do” list
